We celebrate Earth Day this week, and this reminds us of our amazing home, the place that offers us remarkable sights, sounds, experiences. Jungles, Mountains, Oceans, Skies and more. And we are the caretakers. Here are some films that highlight stories of our wondrous planet.
Winged Migration– This documentary (G) on the migratory patterns of birds, shot over the course of three years on all seven continents. will leave you awestruck at the beauty of our world.
Everest is an epic mountain-climbing adventure that was filmed on location in Nepal—at times in freezing temperatures. This moving action movie documents the true story of the 1996 Mount Everest blizzard disaster which took the lives of several climbers. The photography takes you to the sun-drenched summit, but also captures the mountain’s scale and danger in dizzying scenes of the climbers’ strife. It’s so perilous on Everest that additional filming had to take place in the Italian Alps and in Iceland. Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, and Sam Worthington play the courageous adventure seekers who dare to climb the famously harsh mountain.
Gorillas in the Mist – Sigourney Weaver plays primate expert and activist Dian Fossey in this nature epic that was actually filmed near an extinct volcano in Rwanda—the site where Fossey did her original research. The scientist’s life work was to keep these gorillas safe from poachers. One of the original gorillas Fossey studied made it onscreen in the movie. The cinematography is immersive and you’ll feel like you’re right in the midst of nature in this moving story about saving an endangered species.
Whale Rider (2002) – A contemporary story of love, rejection and triumph as a young Maori girl fights to fulfill a destiny her grandfather refuses to recognize.
Happy Earth Day!
