Celebrate Diversity!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on January 18th this year and we were inspired to learn more about our country’s history and the influence for diversity he has had on it.

We were proud to share by  following 6 films in honor of Martin Luther King Jr and all he has done to guide great country. Let’s continue to celebrate diversity in those who went through so much in order to make great change.

 

1. Selma (2014)         

David Oyelowo delivers a powerful performance as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, which is based off the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches in Alabama. The film depicts the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a three-month period in which he fights for voting rights for African-Americans. Also stars Oprah Winfrey as Annie Lee Cooper. 2. The Butler (2013)

Loosely based off the true story of Eugene Allen, The Butler stars Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, an African-American butler who served as a butler in the White House for decades. One of his sons, played by David Oyelowo, becomes active in the Civil Rights Movement while his father is serving in the White House and grappling with unequal pay and fewer opportunities amongst the African-American wait staff. Also stars Oprah Winfrey as Gloria Gaines. How to watch: The Butler is available to rent on Prime Video, Vudu, and iTunes.

 

3. The Help (2011)

This historical period drama stars Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer as two African-American women who work as maids in the South during the Civil Rights Era. Skeeter Phelan, played by Emma Stone, is a society gal who comes back to her hometown after college to write a book and turns the town upside down as she begins to interview the African-American women who spent their lives serving prominent southern families. How to watch: The Help is available to users with a Hulu subscription. Also available to rent on Prime Video, YouTube, Vudu, iTunes, and Google Play.

 

4. BlacKkKlansman (2018)

Based off the true story of Ron Stallworth, this film directed by Spike Lee is about the first African-American detective to serve on the Colorado Springs Police Department in the early 1970’s. Stallworth faces racial slurs from some of his coworkers and is assigned to go undercover at a local rally that national Civil Rights leader Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael) is set to speak at. Stallworth goes on to successfully infiltrate a chapter of the Klu Klux Klan. How to watch: BlacKkKlansman is available to users with a Hulu subscription. 5. I Am MLK Jr. (2018)

A feature-length documentary about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the impact he had on Civil Rights through present day. How to watch: I Am MLK is available to rent on Prime Video and iTunes.

 

6. King in the Wilderness (2018)

6. King in the Wilderness (2018) A look at the final years in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. How to watch: King in the Wilderness is available to users with an HBO Now subscription or a Hulu subscription. Also available to rent on Prime Video, YouTube, and Google Play.
